Discovering Middle Earth – Around Wellington

New Zealand’s capital city, home of the studio behind bringing Middle Earth to life, has a number of filming locations that fans are still able to visit.

The View From Mount Victoria

Central to Wellington is Mount Victoria. The forested areas of the mountain were used to depict Hobbiton Woods, where the hobbits hid from the black riders. There is a view point overlooking the city, that is a must for any traveller to New Zealand.

The Hutt River

Just North of Wellington runs the Hutt River. This was the back drop for the River Anduin between Moonshine and Tōtara Park. Driving past it looks very familiar at the location where Arwen saves Frodo from the Nazgul.

The Entrance to Rivendell

Kaitoke Regional Park transformed into Rivendell, the home of the elves. There are signposted from a car park to the only part of Rivendell that remains, an entrance way. Although there is little left behind, it is a beautiful walk through the native forest.

A drive over the hills to the Wairarapa region will take you to the eerie Putangirua Pinnacles, where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli sought the Paths of the Dead. There are three walking tracks, between 2 and 4 hours to reach the top of the pinnacles. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach the pinnacles due to the weather.

Always check the NZ Doc website before arranging any hikes, to be alerted to any restrictions to paths or adverse weather conditions.

Of course, no visit to Wellington would be complete for any Lord of the Rings fan without exploring the Weta Cave
